At Last Mile Health (LMH), we go as far as it takes for our patients. Do you have project implementation, as well as community engagement and awareness experience, to improve how women and newborns access timely life-saving care? If so, you may be the next Facilitator for the m-mama initiative in Malawi. Reporting to the Regional Manager – m-mama, the m-mama Facilitator will support District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) in the implementation of the m-mama Emergency Transport System (EmRTS) at the district level. The role assists in coordinating dispatch center operations, supporting community driver management, and promoting the integration of m-mama into district health systems.
The m-mama Facilitator works closely with government focal persons to build capacity, provide day-to-day implementation support, and foster district-level ownership of the program from the outset. The role also supports training, supervision, and performance monitoring, ensuring that district activities are conducted in line with m-mama standards, government priorities, and donor requirements to strengthen emergency referral systems and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
This funded position is located in the Southern Region, Malawi, and is open to Malawian nationals. This role will be hired on an 18-month fixed-term contract.

Responsibilities

  • Locations (candidates must be located in at least one of these districts): Balaka, ⁠Chikwawa, Chiradzulu, Machinga, Mangochi, Mulanje, ⁠Mwanza, ⁠Neno, ⁠Nsanje, Phalombe, Thyolo
  • What you'll do
  • m-mama Implementation & District Support
  • Support District Health Management Teams (DHMTs) in integrating m-mama into district referral and transport systems
  • Support the smooth operation of the dispatch center, including ICT, triaging, and transport coordination.
  • Facilitate and support training and mentoring of district focal persons, health centre staff, and community drivers.
  • Work with District Councils and focal persons to strengthen local ownership and integration of m-mama into district health plans (DIP).
  • Identify operational risks and escalate systemic challenges to the Regional Manager for resolution.
  • Community Driver Management & Payments
  • Support district focal persons in coordinating the recruitment, training, and monitoring of community drivers.
  • Follow up on contract signing/MoU processes between drivers and councils, and help ensure payments are processed via government systems.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting and follow-up support to address challenges related to driver management.
  • Community Engagement & Awareness
  • Support health promotion teams in conducting community sensitization activities on the 118 toll-free line.
  • Work with community structures, local leaders, and radio stations to raise awareness and promote timely use of EmRTS
  • Support to identify and address community-level barriers such as mistrust, gender norms, or traditional practices that may affect service uptake
  • Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning
  • Assist in collecting and verifying district-level data for inclusion in dashboards and flash reports
  • Facilitate and support continuous quality improvement (CQI) processes at health facilities and with ambulance and community taxi drivers.
  • Document lessons learned and share key insights with regional and national teams.
  • Support the Regional Manager in ensuring data quality and accuracy through regular field verification and spot checks
  • Work with the district EmRTS focal person to organise monthly meetings that use m-mama data to monitor progress, identify challenges, and support evidence-based decision making.

Requirements

  • What you'll bring
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant certification in Public Health, Nursing, Social Sciences, Health Systems Management, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting maternal, newborn, and reproductive health programs in Malawi.
  • Good understanding of Malawi’s health system, including DHMT operations and DIP planning processes.
  • Experience working with district-level government structures.
  • Familiar with training, mentoring, and supervising health workers or community cadres.
  • Strong data management, monitoring, and reporting skills.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within assigned districts.
  • You’ll impress us if
  • You are familiar with digital health tools and emergency transport systems.
  • You have experience in community mobilization and health promotion.
  • You have strong interpersonal and communication skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
  • You are fluent in English and Chichewa
  • knowledge of other local languages is an asset.
