The International Potato Center (CIP) is implementing a Malawi project aimed at increasing potato production, improving productivity and expanding market access for smallholder farmers. The consultancy supports a more effective potato seed supply system, availability of clean seed for improved varieties, stronger farmer production skills, and better dissemination of research findings.
The Agronomy Technician Consultant will work directly with farmers and field activities in Mchinji and Lilongwe, with a focus on seed and table potato production, post-harvest handling, monitoring, training materials and technical reporting.
Job summary
CIP is seeking an Agronomy Technician Consultant to support a potato production and market-access project in Malawi, including seed-system strengthening, farmer support and technical reporting.
Responsibilities
Prepare a database of farmers and farmer groups identified, mobilized and engaged in potato seed multiplication in Mchinji.
Draft training modules, demonstration protocols and technical content.
Report on demonstration plots of seed varieties established.
Produce training reports for private and public extension agents on potato seed production.
Prepare technical reports on monitoring seed multiplication sites, field activities and table potato production.
Support strengthened communication, monitoring, evaluation, learning and adaptation across project activities.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in an agriculture-related field.
Experience in potato seed and table production, quality control, pest and disease management, potato post-harvest handling, and related analytical and communication skills.
At least 5 years of experience in crop development working with farming communities.
Skills in potato seed production, agronomy and post-harvest technologies.
Fluency in speaking and understanding English and the relevant local language.
The consultancy contract covers a period of 100 days.
